I am stunned - no other word for it. I often have painful foot cramps when I sit in the recliner in the evenings after dinner with my legs elevated. I take a full range of daily vitamins, minerals and other nutritionals, so the old "you-need-more potassium" thing doesn't hold water. When they happen I try walking them out, applying "Pain-a-Trate", applying heat, and eventually they will cease, but are often painful indeed.
A co-worker of Roger's told him when she got muscle cramps she relieved them by eating some plain yellow mustard. I thought, though didn't say, it sounded like a silly, silly thing. But last night the cramping began, and I was willing to try that "silly" thing. About a teaspoon of plain yellow mustard and 30 seconds later the cramp was gone and did not return.
As I am a person who needs to know the why or how of a thing, I got onto Google to see what I could see. I did not find the how or why answers, but did find plenty of testimonials. Here are a couple:
From “People’s Pharmacy” Q. We tried a treatment from your column for nighttime leg cramps. My husband used to get them frequently and would have to walk them off while in pain.He read that taking mustard would alleviate them so he tried it. Now when he gets leg cramps at night, he takes his mustard and they go away quickly. He keeps a few individual packets of mustard in the bedroom. He thought it was just an “old wives’ tale” but now he’s a believer.A. We are delighted to learn that yellow mustard has helped relieve your husband’s leg cramps. A retired pharmacist told us about this remedy nearly six years ago:“A friend of ours uses plain mustard for leg cramps. She swallows a teaspoonful of mustard to relieve the pain. This home remedy works so well for her that she carries packets of mustard wherever she goes.”Since then we have heard from many folks who use yellow mustard to relieve leg cramps. Although there is no science, we suspect that turmeric, which gives mustard its yellow color, may have a beneficial effect."
"Last year when I was on a flight from TX to IN, and the elderly woman across the aisle from me suddenly complained of leg/foot cramps. She tried to stand for a bit, but when that didn't help, the flight attendant brought her some yellow mustard packets. She swallowed one packet and her cramps disappeared. I was stunned."
And so my seeking mind is humbled by a little yellow mustard. Dad is getting extreme cramping in his legs. I will tell him about this. Whether it's the turmeric or something else; if it works on painful cramps - I'm in. But I would still like to know...

In His Time...
"So every race you ran you placed behind the rest. Never were quite fast enough, even though you did your best. And it seems that when you take a step everyone takes two. You wonder why it's always someone else instead of you. Well, the One who keeps the time allowed is watching from above, like a clock that's driven by God's will with hands carved in His love. He guides you as you seek Him, blesses when you find, and He's waiting to exalt you in His time.
We're on God's time; let Him work as He'd intended to. God's time, pray Thy will be done. He's the Author and the Maker; don't rush Him to the end, and He'll make you a masterpiece as one that we call friend...in His time.
He's the one that's in control and working steady, in a world that just won't wait. It will do no good to bless one whose not ready. And good things come to those who wait on Him.
We're on God's time; let Him work as He'd intended to; God's time, pray Thy will be done. He's the Author and the Maker; don't rush Him to the end, and He'll make you a masterpiece as one that we call friend...in His time." Buddy Houghtaling

New Phone Number
Roger & Bethany Have a new home phone number: 480-639-2179.
We finally got our magicJack hooked up with a phone to our computer, and oh my! I don't know why we didn't do it sooner. The phone itself works exactly the same as our land line, except it's through our high-speed internet, and for all local and long distance calling it runs about $20 a year. We actually purchased the $59 for 5-year plan plus the $40 magicJack itself, so it's the same $20/year including the one-time device that plugs into the USB port of our computer. We can also take it and the phone along on trips and get and receive calls the same as if we were home with our laptop.
So we are changing our Verizon cell phone use to just prepaid minutes and using it for away-from-home calls, and using the new home phone number for all calls we would make and receive at home. As far as we can tell right now it is going to save us over $80/month x 12 = at least $960 a year. I can think of many things to do with $960 that we were previously giving to Verizon!

From a Mom on this Mother's Day...

On this Mother's Day, I remember my mom, Gala, and rejoice that she is alive with Jesus, finally able to live the meaning of her name "happy time." I can't wait to be there too and get to know her better than I ever did on this imperfect earth.
I think about my mum, Shirley, who is a blessing in my life. I never am around her without learning something that enriches.
I think of my incredible sisters, Joy, Kokie, Mona, Jan, and Carla. Each of them have taught me in different ways about being a mother, a woman, and I treasure their lessons.
I think about my sons, Josh and Matt. God, thank you for these two young men I love so much. Please protect them. Wrap Your arms around them and help them realize how much they are loved; by me, but especially by You. Bless the work of their hands. Give them wisdom in their choices, and lead them into an eternal relationship with You in Jesus Christ.
God, on this Mother's Day I ask two gifts from You: Give me a forgiving and loving heart, and fill me with Your joy.

Quote From "The Shack"
"The Great Sadness had draped itself around Mack's shoulders like some invisible but almost tangibly heavy quilt. The weight of its presence dulled his eyes and stooped his shoulders. Even his efforts to shake it off were exhausting, as if his arms were sewn into its bleak folds of despair and he had somehow become part of it. He ate, worked, loved, dreamed, and played in this garment of heaviness, weighed down as if he were wearing a leaden bathrobe - trudging daily through the murky despondency that sucked the color out of everything."
This sadness in Mack's life was due to something traumatic that happened, but I think a lof of people in real life have this as a way of life that creeps up and just is, rather than a result of a traumatic experience. If taken apart, I think it boils down to broken relationship, beginning with something not quite right with a God relationship. This happened to Mack even though he knew God, and I think it can happen to others that know God, but perhaps need a healing in their God relationship, which extends out to engulf other relationship as well. I come from a very large family, but if I look at the individuals in my family, there aren't a lot of close relationships. The individuals, including myself, tend to keep a separateness to them. Computer communication gives a parody of relationship, but not the real thing.

Matt Makes Front Page of Wasilla "Frontiersman"

Making a splash
By MATT TUNSETH For the FrontiersmanPublished on Monday, September 15, 2008 10:10 PM AKDT WASILLA —
Frontiersman Matt Hanley, a former swimming standout at Lathrop High School and the University of Alaska Anchorage, is now at the helm of a re-energized Wasilla High School swimming program.“I’d love to see swimming be the popular sport at Wasilla,” the first-year Warriors head coach said during a poolside interview last week.
While swimming often gets overlooked among the more popular fall sports, the tatooed 29-year-old said he believes that the right combination of success and enthusiasm can change that attitude in Wasilla. Hanley’s Wasilla team this year should have no trouble helping him out. The Warriors showed they’ve got a powerful team in the season-opening Homer Invitational two weeks ago, beating eight other teams to win the team title. Wasilla has followed that with a tri-meet win over East Anchorage and Eagle River.“We’ve got a good start,” Hanley said. “The energy’s incredible.”
Though this is his first year at Wasilla, Hanley, a 1997 Lathrop High graduate, is no stranger to the Valley. He’s also the head coach of the Northern Lights Swim Club in the Valley, and last year he served as an assistant at Palmer High. He’s also coached at Bartlett and Service, and as a competitive swimmer he set multiple state records before swimming collegiately for UAA.Between coaching two swim teams, Hanley admitted he doesn’t have much time for anything outside the pool.“All I do is coach,” he said.
Hanley’s enthusiasm for swimming may be eclipsed only by his team. He said that when he found out there was an opening at WHS, he was initially on the fence about taking on the added responsibility. But after talking with team members, he said he felt like something big was about to happen in Wasilla.“The boys won me over,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of heart, a lot of emotion, and I wanted to be a part of that. They have some high goals,” Hanley said. “We’d like to put a lot of energy into state this year as a team and see where we compare with the rest of the field.”While the Warriors are strong at the top, Hanley said he’s also hoping to see his other swimmers make big improvements during the season.“We just try to make everybody as strong as possible, make sure that they realized it’s not just the top four boys. It’s everybody. That’s extremely important at Regions. Regions is more of a numbers game, where those third, fourth, fifth places really make the meet,” he said.
With a dream lineup of solid athletes and enthusiastic coaches, Hanley said he’s happy with how the season has started — and excited to see where the Warriors end up.“Our goal is to get everything to come together at the end,” he said.
